International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Underactive Bladder (ICIQ-UAB)

Summary:

The ICIQ-UAB is the first patient reported outcome (PRO) measure for the assessment of the symptoms and impact on health-related quality of life of underactive bladder (UAB), developed in-line with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Guidance for Industry. Through a robust psychometric validation and scale derivation study (Uren et al., 2025), the 2 scored domains and associated bother for the ICIQ-UAB have been shown to be reliable, valid and sensitive to the severity of the condition. The instrument can be recommended to researchers and clinicians for the comprehensive assessment of symptoms and their impact on health related quality of life on patients with suspected UAB.

Scoring: 

There are two simple summative scored domains with associated bother, which are indicated within the questionnaire:

‘UAB Symptoms’, possible score range from 0 to 44 (11 items); higher scores indicate greater symptom severity. The associated ‘UAB Symptoms Bother’ score has a possible range from 0 to 110.

‘HRQol’, possible score range 0 to 28 (7 items); higher scores indicating greater impact severity. The associated ‘HRQoL Bother’ score has a possible range from 0 to 70.

The standalone items (questions 1-4, 16-19, 27) are not included in any summative scoring, and may be analysed separately.
